New Delhi, Feb 5 (PTI) – With Delhi gearing up for its high-stakes Assembly elections on Wednesday, the national capital is under a heightened security framework. Over 30,000 police personnel, along with 220 companies of paramilitary forces, have been mobilized to ensure the elections are conducted peacefully.
Voters from across Delhi—totaling more than 1.56 crore—are set to cast their ballots starting at 7 am on Wednesday. The contest sees the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) seeking a third consecutive term, relying on its governance record and welfare schemes, while the BJP and Congress aim for a resurgence.
The elections will take place across 13,766 polling stations spread over all 70 Assembly constituencies, where 699 candidates will vie for positions that could significantly impact the political direction of the capital.
Special security measures are in place for sensitive polling areas, with nearly 3,000 booths marked as high-risk. Authorities have deployed drone surveillance, Quick Reaction Teams, and Striking Teams, in addition to one company of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), to maintain law and order during the elections.
"We are fully committed to ensuring free, fair, and peaceful elections. Our pre-poll arrangements are in place, and senior Delhi Police officers are on the ground, supervising security operations," said Special Commissioner of Police (SPNO Delhi Assembly Elections) Devesh Chandra Srivastva.
The Delhi Police have also coordinated with the paramilitary forces, with 150 companies of CAPF and 70 companies from 10 different states contributing to the security effort. In addition to over 30,000 police personnel, 9,000 Home Guards will be on duty across the city.
Srivastva highlighted that security has been tightened at all 65 border points Delhi shares with Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, which have been sealed off. Heavy security deployments have been put in place to prevent any untoward incidents.
The authorities are also closely monitoring the pre-poll period. From January 7 to February 3, the Delhi Police recorded 1,076 cases of alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). A total of 34,250 individuals were detained or arrested during this time. Additionally, police confiscated 469 illegal firearms, 513 cartridges, and seized 1,10,093 liters of illicit liquor. Authorities also confiscated 196.602 kg of drugs worth over Rs 77.9 crore, along with over 1,200 banned injections, resulting in the arrest of 177 individuals.
With these comprehensive security measures, the Delhi Police aim to ensure that the assembly elections take place smoothly, without disruptions.
