Delhi polls: Over 30,000 police personnel, 220 paramilitary units deployed across city

New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI) – In preparation for the February 5 Assembly elections, the national capital is under heavy security cover with over 30,000 police personnel and 220 companies of paramilitary forces deployed across Delhi, officials confirmed on Monday.

During a press conference, Special Commissioners of Police (Law and Order) Madhup Tewari (Zone-II) and Ravindra Yadav (Zone-I) elaborated on the comprehensive security measures being implemented to ensure smooth and peaceful polling.

Tight Security and Record Seizures

Special CP Ravindra Yadav emphasized that Delhi Police is fully committed to conducting free, fair, and peaceful elections, with pre-poll security measures already in place. Authorities have conducted record seizures of drugs, liquor, and cash, as part of their crackdown on illegal activities ahead of polling day.

Nearly 3,000 polling booths have been categorized as sensitive, warranting special security arrangements, including drone surveillance. "For sensitive booths, additional police forces will be deployed, and Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) will be stationed to maintain law and order," Yadav added.

Inter-State Coordination for Seamless Election Process

In January, Delhi Police convened an inter-state coordination meeting with senior law enforcement officials from Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, and Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting, chaired by Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora, focused on cross-border security and election-related coordination.

With just 48 hours left before polling begins, authorities have sealed all 65 border points between Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana, deploying heavy security forces to prevent any unlawful activities.

Crime Rate Declines in January 2025

Authorities also reported a decline in crime rates across multiple categories in January 2025 compared to previous years:

  • Attempted murder cases dropped to 50 (from 71 in 2024 and 59 in 2023).
  • Robberies reduced to 103 (from 146 in 2024 and 111 in 2023).
  • Snatching incidents fell to 369 (from 623 in 2024 and 558 in 2023).
  • Rape and POCSO Act violations dropped to 101 (from 134 in 2024 and 140 in 2023).
  • Molestation cases saw a decline to 110 (from 135 in 2024 and 163 in 2023).
  • Eve-teasing incidents reduced to 16 (from 24 in 2024 and 37 in 2023).
  • Burglary cases stood at 566, showing a slight dip from 619 in both 2024 and 2023.
  • Abduction cases declined to 9, compared to 18 in 2024 and 2023.
  • Fatal road accidents slightly decreased to 87 (from 93 in 2024 and 94 in 2023).

Model Code of Conduct (MCC) Violations and Seizures

With elections approaching, police have intensified vigilance at border checkpoints, resulting in over 1,000 cases of MCC violations recorded between January 7 and February 2.

As part of its crackdown on illegal activities, Delhi Police has:

  • Arrested/detained 33,434 individuals under various legal provisions, including the Excise Act.
  • Seized 462 illegal firearms and 510 cartridges, with 482 arrests under the Arms Act.
  • Confiscated over 1.08 lakh litres of liquor, arresting 1,353 people for related offenses.
  • Seized 196.6 kg of drugs worth over ₹77.9 crore.
  • Recovered 1,200+ banned injections and arrested 177 individuals.
  • Confiscated ₹11.23 crore in cash and 37.39 kg of silver.
These seizures have exceeded the figures recorded during the 2020 Assembly elections, highlighting the increased vigilance by law enforcement.

Final Preparations for Polling Day

Special CP Madhup Tewari confirmed that all district DCPs and senior officials have been briefed on election security. "More than 15,000 licensed arms have been deposited at police stations across the city as part of precautionary measures," he added.

He also noted that throughout the election campaign, no major law-and-order incidents were reported, despite over 1,100 to 1,200 campaign events taking place daily. Special security arrangements were provided for star campaigners, ensuring a smooth campaign period.

"With a robust security plan in place, we are confident that the February 5 Assembly elections will be conducted peacefully," Tewari concluded.
