Delhi will see a significant boost in its public transport network with over 1,000 electric buses set to arrive this month, announced Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh. The initiative is part of the BJP-led government's ambitious plans to modernise Delhi's transport infrastructure and address ongoing financial challenges.

Addressing Financial Losses and Enhancing Sustainability

In an interview, Singh highlighted that Delhi's transport sector is currently operating at a considerable loss of ₹235 crore. Emphasising swift action, he outlined a detailed recovery plan aiming to turn the sector profitable within the next year.

"Our first step will be to introduce electric buses in Delhi, followed by further enhancements to strengthen the transport network," Singh stated. He stressed that an improved public transportation system would encourage people to rely less on private vehicles, thereby reducing congestion and pollution.

Immediate and Long-term Improvements Planned

Singh, who took oath on February 20 as part of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's newly formed cabinet, expressed commitment to making public transport in Delhi more accessible and efficient. The improvements are set to unfold in two phases:

  • Phase One: Immediate and essential reforms in the next six months.
  • Phase Two: Implementation of major infrastructure projects to further enhance public transportation efficiency and accessibility.

Boosting Electric Mobility and Environmental Benefits

Singh underscored the importance of increasing Delhi's fleet of electric buses, aligning with the government's vision for cleaner and greener mobility. He acknowledged the city's current shortage of electric buses and reiterated the government's commitment: "With over 1,000 electric buses arriving this month, public transport will see a significant boost, contributing to a cleaner and greener city."

Extended Electric Vehicle Policy to Encourage Adoption

Delhi's Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy, initially established in 2020 and set to expire last August, has received multiple extensions. Currently, it remains effective until March 31, 2025.

Former Chief Minister Atishi previously announced the reinstatement of subsidies and road tax exemptions for electric vehicles purchased from January 1, 2024, citing worsening air quality as a key motivator. These incentives had been halted during Arvind Kejriwal’s imprisonment.

Ensuring Safety through Investigation of Bus Fires

A committee comprising six experts from IIT Delhi, established by the previous administration, has been investigating the causes behind bus fires in state-run electric and CNG buses. The committee is also examining whether maintenance issues have contributed to these incidents.

Addressing past governance decisions without dwelling on controversies, Singh assured, "The BJP is here to improve Delhi's transport system for its people. Public transport should be efficient, environmentally friendly, and accessible to all."
