New Delhi, May 10 – Delhi University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh has urged affiliated college principals to prioritise the appointment of permanent faculty over guest lecturers. The announcement came during the university's 1022nd Academic Council meeting, held on Saturday.

According to an official university statement, the vice chancellor emphasised the importance of timely recruitment and directed colleges to advertise vacancies and complete the hiring process at least once or twice a year. He also instructed principals to proactively initiate recruitment for current and anticipated vacancies arising due to retirements.

Expansion of Language and Skill Programmes

The Academic Council approved a wide range of academic proposals aimed at expanding the university's course offerings:
  • The School of Open Learning (SOL) will launch certificate, diploma, and advanced diploma courses in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages starting in the 2025-26 academic session.
  • Ramjas College will offer a new one-year Advanced Diploma (JP-3) in Japanese.
  • The Department of Distance and Continuing Education has received approval to begin certificate courses in French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese from the 2024-25 session, to be held at the Open Learning Development Center, CISBC.

New Skill-Based and Science Courses

Under the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022, the council gave the green light to several new syllabi and Skill Enhancement Courses (SECs). These include:
  • Robotics and Automation and Introduction to IoT using Arduino in the Electronics domain
  • Low-Code/No-Code Development in Computer Science
  • Advanced Biomedical Science electives such as Forensic Analysis of Biological Evidence, Forensic Toxicology, Questioned Document Examination, and Injury and Death
Additionally, the council approved the translation of Persian, Arabic, and Urdu syllabus texts into English to enhance accessibility for students.

Recruitment in Government-Funded Colleges

Responding to concerns about faculty appointments in 12 Delhi government-funded colleges, Singh stated that discussions with the Delhi government are ongoing and that a positive outcome is anticipated.

Executive Council Meeting Scheduled

Registrar Dr. Vikas Gupta presented the action report and confirmed the minutes of the previous Academic Council meeting held on December 27. The proposals cleared during Saturday’s session will now be forwarded to the Executive Council, which is scheduled to meet on May 23 for final approval.

Delhi University continues to broaden its academic landscape with these additions while also addressing key staffing challenges to enhance educational quality.
