Thunderstorms and Drizzle Cool the Capital After Intense Heat
New Delhi, April 11 – Delhi woke up to cloudy skies and a pleasant breeze on Friday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting thunderstorms and light rain throughout the day. The shift in weather comes as a welcome break from the sweltering heatwave conditions that had gripped the city earlier this week.
Overnight, parts of the capital experienced light drizzle, helping ease temperatures. The minimum temperature was recorded at 22.8°C, which is 1.8°C above the seasonal average.
Rainfall Across Key Areas
In the 24-hour window ending at 8:30 AM:
- Mayur Vihar received 5.0 mm of rainfall
- Pritampura recorded 1.0 mm
- The Safdarjung observatory, considered Delhi’s official weather station, reported only a trace of rainfall
Relative humidity at 8:30 AM stood at 68%, indicating a moist start to the day.
Forecast: Thunderstorms Likely, Mercury to Stay Below 40°C
According to the IMD, thunderstorms accompanied by light rain are expected to persist through the day. The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 37°C, lower than the 40°C mark hit earlier in the week.
Relief After Three Days of Scorching Heat
The drizzle and cloud cover provided much-needed relief after the city endured a brief but intense heatwave. On Monday, Delhi recorded its first 40°C maximum temperature of the season, with high temperatures lasting three consecutive days.
Adding to the heatwave strain, Wednesday night was the warmest night in three years, with minimum temperatures peaking at 25.9°C.
Air Quality Status
Despite the weather changes, Delhi’s air quality remained in the moderate category. As of 9:00 AM, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 172, as per official data.
The shift in weather has offered a temporary reprieve for Delhiites, but the IMD advises residents to stay updated with daily forecasts as the city transitions into peak summer.
