New Delhi, February 13 The process of verifying marks for Class-12 board exams will no longer be required after the results are declared this year, as the board is shifting to a fully digital evaluation system with on-screen marking, officials of the Central Board of Secondary Education said on Friday.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted a workshop for school teachers and principals on Friday, detailing the modalities of the on-screen marking (OSM) system, which will be implemented from 2026.
However, the evaluation of Class-10 answer books will continue in the physical mode as before.
"Post-result verification of marks will no longer be required, and there will be a reduced need for manpower in verification, as there will be no scope for any rounding errors," Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj said.
"In the older system, students would seek verification to check for discrepancies in the whole numbers or missing numbers. In the new digital evaluation scheme, such discrepancies will be eliminated from the outset," he added.
The official said that the reform was not an overnight change.
"Before making a final decision, we analysed lessons from past experiences, redesigned the systems, carried out dry runs, identified glitches, gathered feedback from stakeholders, conducted global testing, and reinforced the safety and security protocols," Bhardwaj said.
The CBSE conducts Class-10 and Class-12 board examinations annually in India and in 26 other countries, catering to nearly 46 lakh students.
Bhardwaj said that the move will improve coordination and reduce manual intervention, in addition to eliminating rounding errors.
"The option for digital marking is not only environmentally sustainable, but it will also ensure faster evaluation with greater teacher participation. Teachers can continue their regular duties in their schools," he said.
