BJP and DMK’s Kanimozhi Condemn Minister’s Controversial Statement; Demand for Action Grows
Chennai, April 11 – Senior DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Forest Minister K Ponmudy has found himself at the center of a political storm after a video of his purported remarks on Shaivism and Vaishnavism went viral, drawing widespread criticism, including from within his own party.
The comments, whose contents have not been officially clarified by Ponmudy, have triggered strong reactions from the BJP, which has called for his immediate dismissal from the MK Stalin-led cabinet.
“Minister Ponmudy continuing in his post is shameful. CM Stalin, will you order his arrest?” asked BJP Tamil Nadu Vice-President Narayanan Thirupathy in a sharply-worded social media post. He went further to allege that the minister had also maligned the women of Tamil Nadu with his statements.
Kanimozhi Breaks Party Ranks
Adding to the minister’s troubles, DMK MP Kanimozhi publicly condemned his speech, marking a rare instance of intra-party censure.
“The recent speech of Minister Ponmudy is not acceptable,” she wrote on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). “For whatever reason he had spoken, such vulgar words are condemnable.”
Thirupathy welcomed Kanimozhi’s criticism, praising her stance despite the political divide.
No Response from Ponmudy Yet
As the controversy continues to intensify, Ponmudy has not issued any statement or clarification on the matter. His silence has added fuel to the growing demands for accountability from opposition leaders and concerned citizens alike.
A Repeat Offender?
This is not the first time Ponmudy has drawn criticism for his statements. He previously sparked outrage by linking North Indians to street food vending, particularly those selling pani puri in Coimbatore. His remarks had been seen as a dig at Hindi speakers and a broader jab at the promotion of Hindi in Tamil Nadu.
The unfolding controversy has raised pressure on the DMK leadership to take a firm stance, as political opponents gear up for potential gains ahead of upcoming elections.
