DMK slams Palaniswami for his ''DMK flag'' allegation in car chase case; alleges accused from AIADMK

Chennai, Feb 3 (PTI) – Tamil Nadu Law Minister and DMK leader S Regupathy has challenged AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami to apologize for his allegations against the ruling party regarding the East Coast Road car chase incident. Regupathy's demand follows the emergence of a viral video where one of the accused, Chandru, admitted to having an AIADMK family background.

In a post on ‘X’, Regupathy pointed to television channels airing the clip, which purportedly shows Chandru stating that his uncle is an AIADMK office-bearer and his grandfather was also associated with the party. The minister accused AIADMK and other opposition parties of misleading the public by alleging that a DMK flag seen on the accused’s SUV linked the perpetrators to the ruling party.

With the accused himself denying any connection to DMK, Regupathy questioned the stance of AIADMK and opposition leaders. “Will Edappadi Palaniswami now issue an apology?” he asked.

Chandru, arrested on February 1 as a key suspect in the case, claimed in the video that he personally had no political affiliations. He further stated that the DMK flag was placed on the SUV to bypass toll charges and insisted that none of the accused were intoxicated on the day of the incident. However, the exact date of the video remains unclear.

Meanwhile, DMK's organization secretary RS Bharati also reiterated that Chandru hails from an AIADMK-affiliated family and criticized Palaniswami for habitually blaming DMK for all crimes in the state.

Earlier, on January 29, Palaniswami had raised concerns over the incident, questioning whether a DMK flag served as a “license” for crimes against women and accusing the police of inaction due to political pressure. He also cited the incident as evidence of the DMK government’s failure in maintaining law and order.

The case revolves around a shocking car chase video that surfaced last month, showing women in a car being intimidated by men in an SUV carrying a DMK flag. Police have so far arrested five individuals, including Chandru, and are searching for two more suspects. Both SUVs involved in the crime have been seized.

The political blame game continues to intensify as the investigation progresses.
