Units to Provide Production Data Starting April 2022

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has instructed manufacturing units across India to submit their monthly production statistics from April 2022 onward. This data collection is essential for developing the updated series of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), a critical indicator measuring India's industrial growth.

Importance of Timely Data Submission

In a recent communication, DPIIT highlighted the significance of accurate and regular data reporting, stressing that monitoring industrial production is integral to formulating effective industrial policies and strategies aligned with stakeholder requirements.

The department emphasized, "In line with the above, you are requested to submit the monthly production statistics from April 2022 till the latest month and subsequent months."
Manufacturers are required to upload these monthly production figures directly to a designated government portal.

Confidentiality Assured for Industry Data

Assuring complete confidentiality, DPIIT stated that the provided statistics would be utilized exclusively for tracking industrial growth. "The data you submit goes on to find representation in the IIP. As you may be aware, the IIP is an important indicator of industrial growth of the Nation, and your cooperation in this effort is valuable," the department added.

Recent Trends in India's Industrial Production

According to the latest official data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), India's industrial production recorded a growth of just 3.2% in December 2024, marking the slowest pace in three months. The sluggish performance was largely attributed to downturns in the mining and manufacturing sectors.

The Index of Industrial Production (IIP), regularly compiled and published by NSO, serves as the primary gauge for the nation’s factory output, providing critical insights into the health of India's industrial economy.
