Thane, April 5 – A powerful dust storm that swept through Maharashtra’s Thane city on Friday afternoon caused structural damage to an unauthorised seven-storey building in the Mumbra area, prompting the evacuation of residents, officials confirmed on Saturday.
According to Yasin Tadvi, Chief of the Disaster Management Cell at the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), strong gusts of wind led to visible cracks in two rooms situated on the terrace of the high-rise located in Thakur Pada.
Emergency Response Prevents Collapse
In response to the developing situation, personnel from the fire brigade, disaster management cell, and encroachment department swiftly arrived at the scene with rescue equipment. The teams worked together to remove the damaged sections of the structure, effectively preventing a potential collapse.As a precaution, the civic authorities evacuated six residential units within the building and sealed them to ensure the safety of occupants.
City-Wide Impact of the Dust Storm
The dust storm also caused five incidents of tree falls throughout Thane city, resulting in damage to several vehicles. However, no injuries were reported during the storm-related events.The TMC is continuing its assessment of structural risks and safety compliance, particularly concerning unauthorised constructions in vulnerable zones.
