Dylan Naidoo Makes Historic Win at Rain-Shortened Investec South African Open; Shubhankar Sharma Finishes T-58

Durban, March 3: Indian golfer Shubhankar Sharma faced a disappointing finish at the Investec South African Open, ending tied for 58th after a challenging third-round score of four-over 76. The event at Durban Country Club was curtailed to just 54 holes due to persistent heavy rains.

Shubhankar Sharma’s Early Promise Fades

Sharma started the tournament impressively with a six-under 66, briefly sharing the fourth position. However, the Indian golfer couldn't maintain the momentum, posting scores of 72 in the second round and subsequently slipping down the leaderboard following a third-round 76. Sharma concluded the tournament with an aggregate of two-under par (66-72-76).

Dylan Naidoo Makes Golf History

The tournament belonged undeniably to South Africa’s Dylan Naidoo, who etched his name in golf history by becoming the first South African golfer of colour to win this prestigious title.

Naidoo finished tied atop the leaderboard with England’s Laurie Canter, both golfers level at 14-under par after three rounds. With heavy rainfall forcing the cancellation of the scheduled final round, officials decided the championship would be decided via a dramatic playoff at the par-four 18th hole.

With immense historical significance resting upon him, Naidoo rose to the challenge, clinching victory by sinking a crucial birdie on the first playoff hole. His triumph resonated profoundly at Durban Country Club, a venue already steeped in history—most notably from 1963, when Sewsunker “Papwa” Sewgolum famously became the first player of colour to win a professional golf event in South Africa at the Natal Open.

A Magical Sunday for Naidoo and Family

Adding emotional drama to an already remarkable victory, Naidoo’s father had traveled specifically to witness Sunday's scheduled final round. When rain threatened to cancel the day's play, he headed for the airport to return home. Learning of the playoff, he quickly reversed course, arriving just in time to witness his son’s historic triumph.

Naidoo Secures DP World Tour Card and Open Spot

Besides winning the Investec South African Open title, Naidoo earned a coveted DP World Tour card and one of three available slots at The Open Championship, scheduled for July at Royal Portrush.

South Africa’s Darren Fichardt and England’s Marco Penge also secured spots at The Open through this event, highlighting its importance as part of the Open Qualifying Series.

Christiaan Maas Claims Amateur Honours

In other notable results, South Africa’s talented amateur golfer, Christiaan Maas, secured the Freddie Tait Cup for the second time in his career, finishing as the top amateur at 12-under par overall.

The Investec South African Open of 2025, despite its weather-induced limitations, will long be remembered for Dylan Naidoo’s groundbreaking victory—a win that not only reshaped his career but also symbolized a significant moment in South African golf history.
