Earthquake of Magnitude 5 Strikes Central Assam, No Immediate Damage Reported

Guwahati, Feb 27: A magnitude 5 earthquake shook central Assam in the early hours of Thursday, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported. The tremor was recorded at 2:25 am, with its epicenter located in Morigaon district, on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River, at a depth of 16 km.

The quake’s epicenter was approximately 52 km east of Guwahati, causing tremors across multiple districts, including Kamrup Metropolitan, Nagaon, East and West Karbi Anglong, Hojai, Dima Hasao, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, and Goalpara.

Several districts on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra—such as Darrang, Tamulpur, Sonitpur, Kamrup, Biswanath, Udalguri, Nalbari, Bajali, Barpeta, Baksa, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, and Lakhimpur—also experienced the tremors.

The impact of the quake extended beyond Assam, with mild tremors reported in parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and West Bengal. The seismic event was also felt in central-eastern Bhutan, parts of China, and Bangladesh.

Although there have been no immediate reports of injuries or property damage, the sudden jolt forced many residents to rush out of their homes in fear. Assam and the broader Northeastern region are part of a high seismic zone, making earthquakes a frequent occurrence in the area.
