31,576 Offenders Penalised as Part of Cleanliness Drive Across ER Network
Kolkata, May 19, 2025 – In a determined effort to maintain hygiene and cleanliness across its premises, Eastern Railway (ER) has collected a total of ₹32,31,740 in fines from January to March 2025 by penalising individuals for spitting and littering.According to an official statement, 31,576 individuals were fined across the ER network during this period. The crackdown is part of a broader initiative to instil behavioural change and ensure cleaner railway stations and surrounding tracks.
“These measures aim not only to enforce discipline but also to instil a long-term change in behaviour,” said an ER official.
Cleanliness Campaigns and Positive Reinforcement
In addition to strict enforcement, Eastern Railway has been actively running awareness campaigns to educate passengers and vendors on the importance of maintaining cleanliness. These campaigns are being held at various stations and involve active participation from Health Department personnel, Railway Protection Force (RPF), and station staff.In a unique approach to encourage cleanliness, ER has also started recognising passengers and vendors who maintain exemplary hygiene habits. These individuals are being presented with roses as a symbol of appreciation and to highlight the positive impact of individual responsibility.
Ongoing Efforts to Combat Indiscriminate Littering
The zonal railway, headquartered in Kolkata, acknowledged that one of the primary challenges in maintaining cleanliness is the common practice among some passengers of spitting and indiscriminate littering on station platforms and premises.Eastern Railway reiterated its commitment to tackling this issue through sustained awareness, community involvement, and strict enforcement of penalties to ensure a cleaner, more pleasant travel environment for all.
