New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) – A 52-year-old engineer has been arrested in Jaipur, Rajasthan, for allegedly defrauding a company of more than Rs 2 crore by inducing them to deliver mobile phones using forged bank guarantees, police said on Tuesday.
The accused, identified as Cartigueyane Gopal, a resident of Bikaner, was apprehended on January 30. According to the police, the complainant company had entered into an agreement with M/s TSN Ecotech International Pvt. Ltd., a company allegedly run by Gopal's associates, on November 18, 2016. The agreement was to appoint the complainant as a distributor for their products.
To gain the complainant’s trust, Gopal and his associates provided six bank guarantees worth Rs 3 crore. The company, believing in the validity of these guarantees, proceeded to supply goods worth Rs 4.84 crore between November 2016 and January 2017. While the accused made some payments, they later defaulted on a balance of Rs 2.19 crore.
When the complainant attempted to invoke the bank guarantees, they discovered that the guarantees were fraudulent, as they had not been issued by the bank and were declared fake.
The investigation revealed that Gopal had sent several emails to Mohamed Sirajudeen, the managing director of the accused company, containing soft copies of the forged guarantees. Additional Commissioner of Police (EOW) Amrutha Guguloth confirmed that Gopal had received Rs 32 lakh from the accused company into his bank accounts during 2016 and 2017. He also received payments from accounts linked to Sirajudeen.
Despite repeated notices, Gopal failed to join the investigation, leading to his arrest. His associates, Mohamed Sirajudeen, Thotappa Naina Mohammed Sirajudeen, and Vikrant Chaudhary, have already been charge-sheeted in the case.
Police stated that Gopal, an engineer by profession, had devised a plan to defraud the complainant company by preparing and using forged bank guarantees, along with his associates, in an attempt to make quick money. Investigators also revealed that Gopal is involved in at least three other similar cases.
The case is still under investigation as the police work to bring all involved parties to justice.
