Fast Bowler to Undergo Surgery, Aiming for August Return
London, April 4 — England’s preparations for the highly anticipated five-Test home series against India have taken a significant hit, as pacer Olly Stone has been ruled out with a knee injury. The 31-year-old seamer suffered the setback during Nottinghamshire’s pre-season tour of Abu Dhabi in March and will now undergo surgery.According to a statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Stone experienced “major discomfort in his right knee,” which was later diagnosed to require surgical intervention. The operation is scheduled for this week and is expected to sideline him for up to 14 weeks.
“Stone will now begin his rehabilitation process, working closely with the medical teams at both the ECB and Nottinghamshire,” the ECB said.
Key Absence Ahead of India's Tour
Stone's injury puts him out of contention for the start of the India Test series, which begins on June 20 at Headingleyand concludes on August 4. Having last featured for England in the Test series against Sri Lanka in August-September last year, the pacer has been a consistent presence in the red-ball squad, with 17 wickets from five Test appearances. The ECB added that Stone is aiming for a return in August, which could potentially make him available for the final Test, depending on his recovery progress.
England’s Pace Depth Under Pressure
This setback comes as a double blow for England, who have already lost Mark Wood to injury earlier this year. With both experienced pacers sidelined, England’s fast-bowling depth will be tested ahead of what promises to be a demanding series against a formidable Indian batting lineup.Stone’s absence not only impacts England’s on-field strategy but also adds to the workload of other frontline bowlers such as James Anderson and Ollie Robinson, who may now shoulder greater responsibility throughout the summer.
