Kaja Kallas Urges Respect for Agreement, Reiterates EU's Commitment to Regional Peace

New Delhi, May 10 — As India and Pakistan reached a significant agreement to halt military actions across all domains, the European Union welcomed the development, calling it a “vital step toward de-escalation.”

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, took to social media platform X to express support for the ceasefire. She confirmed speaking with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, highlighting the EU’s continued engagement in efforts for regional stability.

“The announced ceasefire between India and Pakistan is a vital step toward de-escalation. All efforts must be made to ensure it is respected. The EU remains committed to peace, stability, and counter-terrorism in the region,” Kallas posted.
The ceasefire, effective from 5 PM on Saturday, follows a call earlier in the afternoon at 3:35 PM between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO) of both nations. This was confirmed by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who noted that the agreement spans all military activity—land, air, and sea.

The development came just days after India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting nine terror infrastructures across Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, in response to the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam.

The announcement also followed remarks by US President Donald Trump, who revealed that both India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire after mediation by the United States.

Kallas’s remarks further cement the international community’s backing of the ceasefire and stress the importance of sustained diplomatic efforts in the region. Her renewed outreach to both Indian and Pakistani leadership underscores the EU’s strategic interest in peace and counter-terrorism initiatives in South Asia.
