India’s External Affairs Minister (EAM), Dr. S. Jaishankar, arrived in London on Tuesday, marking the start of a strategic six-day diplomatic visit aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation with the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Reinforcing the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

In a statement ahead of the visit, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the importance of renewing friendly relations with both the UK and Ireland. Emphasizing the significance of this tour, the MEA noted, “India and the UK share a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, strengthened across diverse areas, including defence and security, trade and economy, health, education, and people-to-people ties.”

Focus on India-UK Free Trade Agreement

During his stay in London on Tuesday and Wednesday, Jaishankar is slated to engage in high-level talks with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and various other senior officials. The discussions will notably center around the recently re-launched India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations. Additionally, broader foreign policy and security issues, particularly the UK's efforts towards facilitating a "lasting peace" in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, will form a crucial part of these closed-door dialogues.

Addressing India’s Global Role at Chatham House

On Wednesday evening, Jaishankar will participate in an exclusive session at London's prestigious Chatham House think tank. The event, themed "India’s rise and role in the world," will spotlight India's expanding geopolitical influence.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations with Ireland

Jaishankar's diplomatic mission extends to Dublin on Thursday, where he will meet Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris and connect with members of the local Indian community. The MEA underscored that “India and Ireland share friendly bilateral relations founded on democratic values, cultural affinity, and expanding economic engagement.”

Inauguration of New Indian Consulates in Belfast and Manchester

Returning to the UK on Friday, Jaishankar will inaugurate the new Consulate General of India in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He will subsequently travel to Manchester on Saturday to open another Indian consulate, reflecting India's effort to enhance its diplomatic presence in northern England.

UK Foreign Office Minister for the Indo-Pacific, Catherine West, is expected to join Jaishankar at these inaugurations.

Celebrating the Diaspora Community

In a special diaspora engagement coinciding with International Women’s Day on March 8, a community event will be hosted at Manchester’s iconic Old Trafford stadium. This event underscores the vital role played by the Indian community in strengthening India-UK ties.
