Singapore, February 25 – Five Indian-origin men have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from two to three years, along with caning, for their involvement in a deadly riot at Singapore's Concorde Hotel and Shopping Mall in 2023. The violent altercation resulted in the death of former bouncer Mohammad Isrrat Mohd Ismail.
The convicted individuals and their respective sentences are:
- Sridharan Elangovan (30 years old): 36 months in jail, six strokes of the cane.
- Manojkumar Velayanatham (32 years old): 30 months in jail, four strokes of the cane.
- Sashikumar Pakirsamy (34 years old): 24 months in jail, two strokes of the cane.
- Puthenvilla Keith Peter: 26 months in jail, three strokes of the cane.
- Raja Rishi: 30 months in jail, four strokes of the cane.
Riot Stemmed from Club Dispute
The incident occurred on August 19, 2023, when a group of about ten individuals, including the accused, was drinking at Club Rumours at Concorde Hotel and Shopping Mall. During this time, Isrrat and his friend Muhammad Shahrulnizam Osman (30), both former bouncers at the club and members of a rival secret society, arrived to deliver Isrrat’s wedding invitation to club staff.Tensions escalated between the groups, leading to a heated verbal exchange. At around 6 a.m., as the club was closing, the dispute turned violent, culminating in Isrrat being stabbed multiple times. He was bleeding profusely when club staff called for an ambulance, but he was pronounced dead upon reaching the hospital.
Ongoing Trial for Murder Accused
In addition to the five men sentenced, Asvain Pachan Pillai Sukumaran (30) has been charged with murder for allegedly killing Isrrat. His case is still pending in court.Six other men, aged between 25 and 33, were named as co-accused in court documents for their participation in the riot.
The case has drawn significant attention in Singapore, highlighting concerns over secret society-linked violence and nightclub-related conflicts.
