Imphal, May 16 — In a coordinated security operation, forces apprehended five militants belonging to various banned outfits across three districts of Manipur on Thursday, officials confirmed on Friday.
Arrests Made Across Imphal East, Imphal West, and Thoubal
Two operatives of the banned United National Liberation Front (UNLF-Koireng) were arrested from Andro Parking and Khurai Konsam Leikai in Imphal East district. Authorities recovered one firearm and several rounds of ammunition from their possession.In Thoubal district, security forces captured an active cadre of the outlawed Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group), or KCP (PWG), from Khangabok Part II. The individual was reportedly involved in extortion-related activities.
Another militant, linked to the proscribed Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (SOREPA), was detained at Khonghampat Awang Leikai in Imphal West.
Separately, a Prepak (Pro) cadre was arrested from Heirok Part III in Thoubal district. A substantial cache of weapons was recovered from him, including two rifles, a hand grenade, and multiple rounds of ammunition.

Background of Ethnic Tensions
Security operations have intensified in Manipur since ethnic violence erupted between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in May 2023. The conflict has claimed over 260 lives and displaced thousands.In response to the prolonged unrest, the central government imposed President’s Rule in Manipur on February 13, 2025, following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The legislative assembly, whose tenure extends until 2027, remains under suspended animation.
