Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that India has increased its commitment to climate action, allocating nearly 5.6 percent of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Speaking in a panel discussion on "Degrees of Instability: Climate Security in a Warming World" in Munich, Germany, Ms. Sitharaman noted that six years ago, India was spending approximately 3.7 percent of its GDP on climate action. She emphasized that countries that have contributed less to emissions cannot be expected to bear an equal financial burden in addressing climate change.
The Minister further stated that India has achieved two-thirds of its nationally determined commitments in the renewable energy sector and will continue to invest in this area. Ms. Sitharaman also mentioned that funding for carbon capture strategies has been allocated in the Union Budget 2026-27, with the aim of implementing them across the country.
