New Delhi, May 10 – GAIL (India) Ltd, the state-owned gas utility, has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Karnataka to explore the development of renewable energy projects with a capacity of up to 1 gigawatt (GW) in the state over the next five years.
The agreement was signed in Bengaluru on May 9, 2025, in the presence of Karnataka’s Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development, MB Patil, and Energy Minister KJ George. Representing the two parties were S Selvakumar, Principal Secretary of the Commerce & Industries Department, and Parivesh Chugh, Executive Director (SD & Renewables) at GAIL.
Karnataka to Facilitate Approvals for GAIL
Under the MoU, the Karnataka government will assist GAIL in securing all necessary permissions, registrations, clearances, and incentives as per the state’s prevailing policies and regulations. While GAIL did not disclose the financial specifics of the initiative, the agreement signals the company’s growing commitment to its sustainability roadmap.GAIL aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions from its operations by 2035, with renewable energy forming a core component of its decarbonization strategy.
