New Delhi, Feb 2 (PTI) – In a major crackdown on organized crime, notorious gangster Joginder Gyong—wanted for multiple criminal cases across India—was deported from the Philippines to Delhi on Sunday and handed over to the Delhi Police Special Cell, officials confirmed.
Gyong, a key member of the Kaushal Chaudhary gang, had close ties with designated terrorist Arsh Dalla and fugitive gangster Lucky Patial, both linked to the banned Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF). He was wanted by law enforcement in Haryana and Delhi for a series of violent crimes, including murder, extortion, and kidnapping for ransom.
Arrest and Extradition Process
Authorities in the Philippines arrested Gyong in Bacolod City in July 2023 following India’s request for his extradition. Subsequently, on October 25, 2024, the CBI issued an Interpol Red Notice, alerting international agencies to track the fugitive.Following diplomatic and legal coordination, Gyong was deported via Bangkok and arrived in Delhi on February 1, 2025.
Murder and Criminal Activities
Gyong was wanted in multiple high-profile crimes, including the murder of a man in Panipat. He suspected the victim of leaking information to the police about his gangster brother, Surender Gyong, who was killed in a police encounter in 2017. In retaliation, Joginder allegedly orchestrated the Panipat murder in December 2017 before fleeing the country.Apart from this, Gyong has been convicted in 15 cases, including five murders, and was actively involved in robbery, extortion, attempted murder, and arms smuggling across Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan.
Gangster-Terrorist Nexus
According to Additional CP (Special Cell) Pramod Kushwah, intelligence reports indicated Gyong’s deep involvement in extortion, contract killings, and international arms smuggling. He was also linked to pro-Khalistani elements operating abroad, aiding in their financial and logistical networks.Investigators believe Gyong played a role in several high-profile assassinations, including:
- Vicky Midhukhera, former SOPU president,
- Gurlal Brar, and
- International kabaddi player Sandeep Nangal Ambia.
A Persistent Threat
This is not Gyong’s first escape from law enforcement. He was previously deported from South Africa in 2007, only to rebuild his criminal empire abroad. With his return to India, authorities are expected to uncover key operatives, logistical hubs, and financial backers linked to him.His younger brother, Surender Gyong, was also a notorious criminal killed in a police encounter in 2017.
Next Steps
With Gyong back in Indian custody, security agencies are now closely investigating his connections with both domestic and international crime syndicates. His interrogation is expected to expose further links between Indian gangster networks and foreign terror groups. His arrest marks a significant victory for law enforcement, cutting off a crucial link between organized crime and separatist terror outfits operating from abroad.
