Chandigarh, March 1: A notorious gangster allegedly involved in extortion rackets was arrested after an exchange of gunfire with Punjab police on the Zirakpur-Ambala highway near Mohali on Saturday, police said.

The suspect, identified as Malkiat alias Maxi, reportedly has connections with Canada-based gangster and designated terrorist Goldy Brar, as well as gangster Goldy Dhillon. According to authorities, Maxi initiated the shootout by opening fire at the police team, who retaliated swiftly.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Punjab's Director General of Police (DGP), Gaurav Yadav, confirmed the incident:

"In a major breakthrough, @sasnagarpolice in a joint operation with AGTF arrests Gangster Malkiat @ Maxi, an operative of foreign-based terrorist Goldy Brar and gangster Goldy Dhillon, after a brief exchange of fire near Ghagar bridge on Zirakpur-Ambala Highway, SAS Nagar."
Maxi sustained a bullet injury to his left leg during the confrontation. He was immediately taken to Civil Hospital, Mohali, where he is undergoing medical treatment. Police recovered a pistol from the gangster's possession following his arrest.

Originally from Rodala village in Rajasansi, Amritsar, Maxi has been involved in multiple cases related to extortion. Most recently, in January 2025, Maxi, acting on behalf of Goldy Brar and Goldy Dhillon, reportedly demanded ₹50 lakh from a Mohali-based property dealer.

Goldy Brar, who currently operates from Canada, has already been officially labeled a terrorist by the Indian government due to his involvement in serious criminal activities.

Police investigations into Maxi's criminal activities continue, with further details expected to emerge in the coming days.
