Chandigarh, March 1 – A suspected gangster affiliated with foreign-based terrorist Goldy Brar and gangster Goldy Dhillon was injured in a shootout with police after attempting to escape custody on the Zirakpur-Ambala highway in Mohali on Saturday, according to officials.

The accused, identified as Malkiat alias Maxi, sustained a bullet wound in his left leg after exchanging fire with the police. Maxi, originally from Rodala village in Rajasansi, Amritsar, had been actively running an extortion racket for Brar and Dhillon, targeting local businessmen, said Punjab Director General of Police (DGP), Gaurav Yadav.

Maxi and his associate Sandeep alias Deep were previously arrested by the Patiala Police under the Arms Act. Both suspects had been recently brought from Patiala Jail to Mohali by the SAS Nagar Police on a production warrant linked to an extortion case from January 2025. In that incident, Maxi and his accomplice allegedly demanded ₹50 lakh from a Mohali-based property dealer.

Following revelations made during Maxi's interrogation, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Bikramjit Singh Brar from Dera Bassi led a police team to recover weapons reportedly hidden by Maxi along the Zirakpur-Ambala highway. Upon reaching the location, Maxi unexpectedly opened fire on the police personnel, attempting to flee custody. The police responded in self-defense, resulting in Maxi sustaining a gunshot wound.

The injured gangster was immediately shifted to the Civil Hospital in Mohali for medical treatment, where he is currently under observation.

DGP Yadav confirmed the recovery of a firearm, three live cartridges, and two spent bullet casings from Maxi's possession.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), SAS Nagar, Deepak Pareek said that Maxi has an extensive criminal background involving extortion and illegal arms possession. He assured that a detailed investigation is ongoing, with additional measures being taken to further unravel Maxi's criminal network.

Police continue their probe into the case, aiming to dismantle the larger extortion racket run by gangster networks operating from abroad.
