Etawah (UP), February 3 (PTI): In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Etawah police arrested three smugglers and seized over a quintal (112.360 kg) of ganja worth approximately ₹25 lakh. The operation took place on Monday during a routine vehicle check at Pattapura Aayara culvert under Basrehar police station limits.
According to Etawah Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sanjay Kumar Verma, the police flagged down a truck for inspection, but two individuals jumped out and attempted to flee. However, they were quickly apprehended along with the truck driver. Upon searching the vehicle, authorities discovered five plastic bags filled with ganja hidden inside.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Sonu Chauhan, truck owner Tej Pratap Singh Chauhan alias Ashish Chauhan, and truck driver Ranjeet Singh. The police revealed that Sonu Chauhan has 12 criminal cases registered against him, while Ranjeet Singh has four cases in various police stations across Etawah and Auraiya districts. Further legal proceedings are underway.
In a separate operation, Barabanki police arrested two drug smugglers and confiscated a massive consignment of 52 quintals of illegal ‘bhaang’ (cannabis). The arrests were made at Kishunpur turn under Ramnagar police station on Monday.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Dinesh Kumar Singh stated that the accused, identified as Pradeep Kumar Yadav and Sheelu Yadav, are residents of village Ramnagar under Fatehpur police station in Barabanki district. Along with the banned substance, the police also seized a truck used in the smuggling operation.
A case has been registered against both individuals under the Excise Act at Ramnagar police station, and further investigations are ongoing.
