Highlights impact of online platforms, toxic masculinity, and student suicides post-pandemic

New Delhi, April 4 — Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi has called for an urgent debate in the Lok Sabha on the mental health crisis among Indian youth, emphasizing the growing influence of social media, online toxicity, and post-pandemic psychological challenges.

Raising the issue on Thursday in Parliament, Gogoi pointed to a sharp rise in mental health concerns among young people, linking it to increased screen time, cyberbullying, academic pressure, and emotional distress. He cited a troubling figure—nearly 40,000 student suicides in the past five years—reflecting the gravity of the situation.

Mental Health Crisis Post-COVID

Gogoi, who serves as the Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, stressed that the pandemic had intensified youth reliance on digital platforms. This, he said, has fueled stress and anxiety at unprecedented levels.

"Due to the social media impact, stress has been increasing, anxiety is going up, and all these have affected the mental health of the youth in a big way," Gogoi stated.

Toxic Influences and the Role of Media

The Congress MP also drew attention to the influence of online personalities promoting toxic masculinity, which he believes contributes to unhealthy behavioral standards among adolescent boys. He referenced the Netflix series Adolescence, noting how it effectively portrays the psychological challenges faced by teenagers in the digital age.

"We need to normalise the fact that real strength lies in facing emotions," he said. "We must promote emotional intelligence and open dialogue to help young people navigate stress and anxiety."

Call for Parliamentary Action

In conclusion, Gogoi urged the Lok Sabha to initiate a comprehensive and constructive debate on the mental health challenges faced by youth. He emphasized the importance of addressing these issues at a national level to foster awareness, support systems, and policy interventions.

The appeal comes at a time when mental health is emerging as a key concern across India, particularly among students navigating academic competition, digital distractions, and emotional pressures.
