Bhubaneswar, Feb 4 (PTI) – A tragic accident near Nandankanan Zoo in Bhubaneswar claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl on Tuesday when a state-run 'Mo Bus' hit her bicycle, police reported.

The incident occurred on the Patia-Nandankanan Zoo road, triggering outrage among local residents who blocked the road for over two hours in protest. Demanding justice and safety measures, the protesters called for immediate compensation for the bereaved family and urged authorities to construct rumble strips at the junction to prevent further accidents.

"We have detained the bus driver responsible for the accident. The protesters have raised concerns over road safety and are demanding compensation as well as traffic-calming measures," said ACP Ramesh Chandra Bishoi.

In response to the outcry, the local police announced plans to coordinate with traffic authorities to regulate city bus services in the area and enhance road safety.

Meanwhile, the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT), which operates the 'Mo Bus' service, has offered financial aid of ₹1 lakh to the family of the deceased girl.

The tragic incident has intensified calls for stricter traffic regulations and better infrastructure to ensure pedestrian safety, particularly for schoolchildren and cyclists.
