GMR Airport joins United Nations Global Compact initiative

New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI): GMR Airports Ltd (GAL) announced on Monday that it has officially become a member of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), a prestigious corporate sustainability initiative.

As a major player in the aviation industry, GAL operates key airports in Delhi, Hyderabad, Goa, and Medan (Indonesia). The company is also engaged in providing technical expertise at Mactan-Cebu International Airport in the Philippines and is actively developing new airport projects in Bhogapuram (Visakhapatnam) and Crete (Greece).

By joining the UN Global Compact, GMR Airports has committed to aligning its business strategies and operations with the Ten Principles of the initiative, which emphasize human rights, labor rights, environmental sustainability, and anti-corruption measures. Additionally, the company aims to contribute to the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability, GAL highlighted that all its airports hold green building certifications from either the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) or the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).

Commenting on this milestone, Kiran Kumar Grandhi, CEO and Managing Director of GMR Airports, stated, "Joining the UNGC marks a pivotal step in our journey toward becoming a global leader in sustainable aviation."

In the financial year FY24, GMR Airports handled an impressive 121 million passengers, underscoring its significant role in the aviation sector.
