Panaji, March 1: The much-anticipated Goa Carnival 2025 commenced on Saturday with a spectacular float parade along the scenic Mandovi River, marking the beginning of four days of grand celebrations. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant inaugurated the event, highlighting its significance in promoting Goa’s rich cultural heritage and boosting tourism.
The opening parade witnessed an impressive lineup of vibrant floats, led by the traditional float of ‘King Momo’. This year, Cleven Fernandes, selected by the tourism department, assumed the role of King Momo and proclaimed the traditional decree of "eat, drink, and be merry." However, he also urged revelers to celebrate responsibly.
Goa Carnival: A Cultural Extravaganza
Speaking at the event, CM Sawant emphasized how the Goa Carnival serves as a global attraction by showcasing the state’s unique traditions. “Goa’s culture is beautifully reflected through the Carnival’s float parade. Festivals like these play a crucial role in attracting tourists, and our government is committed to further strengthening tourism in the state,” he said.Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte underlined the event’s alignment with regenerative tourism, which integrates economic, environmental, social, and cultural sustainability. “The float parade exemplifies Goa’s communal harmony and vibrant spirit. We are working towards tourism initiatives that preserve and promote Goa’s heritage while benefiting the local economy,” he added.
A Celebration of Nostalgia and Festivity
Renowned actor Varsha Usgaonkar, who hails from Goa, also graced the event and expressed her delight in witnessing the festivities. “The Carnival brings back fond childhood memories. I always dreamed of being a queen in the float parade,” she shared.The Goa Carnival, a legacy of the Portuguese era, remains one of the most awaited annual events in the state, drawing visitors from across the country and abroad. The celebrations will continue for four days, featuring music, dance, and lively performances across different parts of Goa.
