In a landmark operation, Goa police arrested a man on Saturday from Guirim village, strategically located between the prominent cities of Panaji and Mapusa, confiscating hydroponic weed worth an estimated Rs 11.67 crore. According to authorities, this marks the largest-ever drug seizure recorded in the coastal state's history.
The accused was apprehended after being found in possession of precisely 11.672 kilograms of high-quality hydroponic weed. Police officials confirmed that he has been formally booked under the stringent provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Chief Minister Praises Crime Branch’s Efforts
Reacting promptly to the breakthrough, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant lauded the Crime Branch via a post on X (formerly Twitter). He said, "Congratulations to the Crime Branch Goa Police for Goa's Biggest-Ever Drug Bust!"
The Chief Minister further elaborated on the significance of the seizure, emphasizing, "In a major breakthrough, the Crime Branch has successfully busted a drug racket, arresting an individual in possession of 11.672 kg of hydroponic weed worth Rs 11.67 crores. This is a testament to the relentless efforts of our law enforcement agencies in keeping our state drug-free."
Goa Government Reinforces Zero-Tolerance Policy on Drugs
Sawant reiterated his government's commitment to upholding a zero-tolerance stance against drug trafficking and abuse. To fortify the fight against narcotics, he assured that the state would strengthen intelligence networks and enhance surveillance. The proactive measures aim to safeguard Goa’s youth and society from drug-related threats.
Understanding Hydroponic Weed Cultivation
Hydroponics refers to cultivating plants without traditional soil, using mineral-rich, water-based nutrient solutions in controlled, artificial environments. This method typically results in high-yield and superior-quality produce, making hydroponically grown weed especially valuable in illegal narcotics markets.
Authorities continue their investigation to identify potential links and networks connected to this significant drug seizure.
