Panaji, Feb 3 (PTI) – The recent announcement in the Union Budget regarding the expansion of medical seats will significantly benefit Goa, state Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said on Monday.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting the Budget for 2025-26 on Saturday, revealed plans to add 10,000 medical seats next year as part of a broader initiative to introduce 75,000 new seats over the next five years.
Speaking to reporters, Rane lauded the move, emphasizing its positive impact on medical education. “The Union Budget has given a much-needed push to medical education. The announcement of an additional 75,000 medical seats marks a revolution in the sector. Goa will benefit from this initiative, as the state is expecting 100 more MBBS seats,” he stated.
Rane also highlighted the government’s focus on cancer care, describing the provision for day care cancer centres at district hospitals as a timely initiative. “With cancer cases on the rise, this was the need of the hour. The budget reflects how Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims to drive national progress through healthcare advancements,” he added.
The Union Budget, tabled in Parliament on February 1, has allocated resources to establish 200 day care cancer centres in 2025-26, with plans to extend such facilities across district hospitals in the next three years.
Furthermore, Rane underscored the impact of the budget’s focus on medical tourism, stating that it would bolster both the healthcare and tourism sectors in Goa. “These initiatives will attract international travelers to Goa in a bigger way, strengthening our state’s standing as a medical tourism hub,” he affirmed.
