Guwahati, February 12 A court in Guwahati has restrained Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi, Bhupesh Baghel, and Jitendra Singh from making "defamatory statements" against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has filed a defamation case against them worth Rs 500 crore, until they appear in person.
After hearing the petitioner's counsel, Civil Judge of Senior Division No 1, Nayanjyoti Sarma, issued an "interim injunction" on Wednesday, restraining Gogoi, Baghel, Singh, as well as a prominent Assamese daily, from "making, publishing, circulating, or disseminating any further defamatory statements or materials concerning the petitioner until their appearance in court".
In his order, Judge Sarma stated that the court believes that if an "interim injunction" is not issued, it will "defeat justice and there is every possibility of multiple proceedings".
The court has fixed the date for the defendants to appear before it on March 9.
