Assam CM Lays Foundation for Two Marriott Properties Worth Rs 500 Crore

Guwahati, May 12 – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced a major leap for the state’s hospitality sector, revealing plans for 11 new five-star hotels in Guwahati. The announcement came as he laid the foundation stone for two premium Marriott International hotels, marking a significant milestone in the city’s transformation into a leading hospitality hub in Northeast India.

The two upcoming properties — Marriott Resort & Spa and Fairfield by Marriott — will be built on a sprawling 76 bigha (over 25-acre) site and developed with an investment of Rs 500 crore. These projects are part of the MoUs signed during the Advantage Assam 2.0 investment summit held earlier this year.

Guwahati gets a leg up on attracting global hospitality chains! Today, I performed the Bhoomi Poojan for two major Marriott International properties,” the Chief Minister shared on X.

Surge in Hospitality Investment

Apart from the two new Marriott ventures, Sarma disclosed plans for four additional Marriott hotels, two new Taj properties, and a Lemon Tree hotel in Guwahati. In addition, the Radisson Group is expanding its existing capacity by adding 100 more keys. The current Vivanta by Taj is also being replaced by a more expansive Taj project.

“These projects will significantly strengthen Assam’s hospitality infrastructure and are expected to create substantial direct and indirect employment opportunities,” Sarma said. “This will contribute positively to the state’s economic growth and elevate Guwahati’s status on the global tourism map.”

Rapid Implementation Timeline

Highlighting the swift execution of the initiatives, the Chief Minister noted that groundwork has commenced within just three months of signing the investment agreements — a testament to the government’s push for ease of doing business in Assam.

With a robust pipeline of luxury accommodations and international brand participation, Guwahati is poised to emerge as a vibrant destination for tourism, business travel, and global events.
