Hamirpur: Home guard jawan collapses, dies during wrestling match at local Chhinj fair

Hamirpur (HP), Feb 4 (PTI) – A 56-year-old home guard jawan, Udham Singh, tragically lost his life while participating in a wrestling match at the local Chhinj fair in Hamirpur district. The incident occurred on Monday evening at Makker village, where Singh, an experienced wrestler, stumbled and collapsed during the bout, police said on Tuesday.

Superintendent of Police Bhagat Singh Thakur stated that Singh was rushed to Bhota Hospital after his condition became critical. However, doctors declared him dead after a medical examination. His body was later handed over to his family following a postmortem. Authorities are awaiting the postmortem report to determine the exact cause of death.

Chhinj fairs, popular in various parts of Himachal Pradesh, celebrate local sports and trade, drawing large crowds for traditional games like kushti (wrestling) and kabaddi. Singh, a resident of Dhudana village in Galore, had been actively participating in wrestling matches for the past 40 years. Unfortunately, the Makkar Dangal match on Sunday marked the end of his long-standing association with the sport.

Eyewitnesses reported that Singh began losing balance mid-match before collapsing. Organizers and spectators rushed to assist him, but his condition deteriorated rapidly. The police have taken custody of the body as part of their investigation into the incident.

District Home Guard Commandant Vinay Kumar expressed his grief, calling Singh an "extremely hardworking and dedicated member" of the battalion. "The District Home Guard Battalion has lost one of its most experienced and committed personnel," he added.

Authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding Singh’s sudden demise as the wrestling community mourns the loss of a seasoned competitor.
