Chandigarh, Feb 2 (PTI) – The death toll in the Bhakra Canal accident in Haryana’s Fatehabad district has climbed to 10 after authorities recovered another body on Sunday evening, officials confirmed.

The tragic accident took place on Friday night when a vehicle carrying 14 passengers plunged into the canal near Sardarewala village in Ratia amid dense fog. Poor visibility led the driver to lose control, resulting in the vehicle veering off the road and into the canal, police had earlier stated.

Rescue teams had previously recovered nine bodies, while two people were rescued alive. However, three individuals remained missing. On Sunday, a senior police officer confirmed the retrieval of a woman’s body, raising the official toll to 10. The remaining two missing individuals, including another woman, are feared dead.

Tragic Return from a Wedding

The passengers, mostly residents of Mehmara village, were returning home after attending a wedding in Fazilka district, Punjab, when the mishap occurred.

Efforts to locate the remaining missing persons continue as authorities and rescue teams work against the clock.
