Thane, February 26: A key member of a Haryana-based gang involved in thefts targeting passengers on long-distance trains has been arrested in Thane, leading to the recovery of stolen valuables worth approximately ₹12 lakh, a senior official confirmed on Wednesday.

The arrest followed a complaint from a Pune resident who reported the theft of gold ornaments from his bag while traveling on the Veraval Express between Vapi and Vasai Road stations on February 2.

Acting on the complaint, the Government Railway Police (GRP) launched an investigation, said Senior Crime Branch Inspector Vijay Khedkar. After analyzing multiple leads, officials tracked down and apprehended the suspect near the State Transport (ST) stand close to Thane railway station on Monday.

During the arrest, authorities recovered 178 grams of gold jewelry, valued at ₹11.7 lahks, from the accused. The police have not yet disclosed his identity.

Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the gang involved in similar train thefts, the official added.
