New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI): The Delhi High Court on Monday refused to grant an urgent hearing to a plea alleging violations of election laws by political parties in the run-up to the upcoming assembly elections in the national capital.
A bench comprising Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela stated that the matter would be heard in the normal course whenever it is officially listed. The petitioner's counsel had sought an urgent listing of the case at 2 PM, but the court questioned the necessity of immediate intervention.
"Why 2 PM? You are challenging the actions of political parties in announcing freebies. Tomorrow is the last day for electioneering, or maybe today. Whatever impact the freebies were to have has already occurred," the bench remarked.
The court clarified that it would follow standard procedures in scheduling the case. "It will be listed as per the standing order. We are not commenting on the merits of the case," it added.
The petitioner’s counsel contended that the announcement of freebies by political parties was in violation of the law established by the Supreme Court and had compromised the integrity of the electoral process.
Delhi is set to vote on February 5, with the election results scheduled for announcement on February 8.
