Lucknow, February 3 (PTI) – Mahant Satyendra Das, the head priest of the Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya, has suffered a brain stroke and remains in critical condition at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow.
According to a statement from SGPGI on Monday, the 85-year-old priest, who is also a diabetic and suffers from hypertension, was shifted to the hospital on Sunday after receiving initial treatment.
"Shri Satyendra Das ji is suffering from a stroke. He is diabetic and hypertensive. He was admitted to SGPGI on Sunday and is currently in the Neurology ward HDU (High Dependency Unit). Though his condition is critical, he is following commands, and his vitals are stable at present. He is under close monitoring," the hospital stated.
Mahant Satyendra Das has been a significant religious figure in Ayodhya and was the priest of the makeshift Ram templeon December 6, 1992, when the Babri Masjid was demolished.
His health condition is being closely observed by a team of medical experts at SGPGI, and further updates on his recovery are awaited.
