Shimla, May 12 – Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, on the occasion of Buddha Purnima, urged citizens to embrace the timeless teachings of Lord Buddha, calling them a beacon of guidance for a self-reliant and peaceful society.

Participating in a special programme held at a local school in Shimla, CM Sukhu extended warm greetings on Vaishakh Purnima, which marks the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana of Lord Buddha. He emphasized the importance of Buddha’s mantra, “Appa Deepo Bhava” or “Be your own light”, as a powerful message of self-reliance that continues to resonate in modern times.

Buddha's Teachings: A Path for Today’s World

"Lord Buddha's principles of peace, compassion, and tolerance are not just ancient wisdom but a way of life that remains relevant in today’s world," CM Sukhu said. He stressed that in an age overshadowed by violence and intolerance, Buddha’s message offers an essential guide for creating a harmonious and compassionate society.

"In our pursuit of material success, we often lose balance and peace of mind. Buddha’s teachings illuminate the path to true happiness and inner harmony," he added.

A Day of Spiritual and Cultural Significance

CM Sukhu described Buddha Purnima as a sacred day due to the convergence of three major events in the life of Lord Buddha—his birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana—making it deeply meaningful for followers across the globe.

Reflecting on personal memories, the chief minister also recalled his time as a municipal councillor in Shimla and fondly remembered playing cricket in the school ground during winter vacations. "Many of my friends studied here, and this place holds a special place in my heart," he said.

Honouring India-Tibet Friendship

As part of the celebrations, CM Sukhu felicitated Tshering Palkit Negi and Pema Dorjee with the India-Tibet Friendship Award in recognition of their contributions. The event also featured a vibrant cultural programme showcasing the rich traditions of Tibet, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti.

The occasion not only celebrated Lord Buddha’s life and philosophy but also highlighted the enduring cultural ties and harmony in the region.
