Himachal: Panchayat to plant saplings for marriages, childbirths in Hamirpur

Hamirpur (HP), Feb 3 (PTI) – In a commendable step towards environmental conservation, the Barin gram panchayat in Himachal Pradesh has launched a unique initiative to plant trees on special family occasions such as marriages and childbirths.

As part of the initiative, two trees will be planted for every marriage, while the birth of a child—particularly a girl—will be marked by the plantation of a sapling, Panchayat Pradhan Ravinder Thakur announced. This decision was finalized in a recent meeting held on Sunday.

To ensure the success of the initiative, panchayat representatives will actively participate in the plantation drive, and families will be required to submit a photograph documenting the planting process. Additionally, the saplings will primarily consist of medicinal or fruit-bearing trees, contributing to both environmental and economic benefits.

In an effort to involve the community, Mahila Mandals will play a key role in this program. A meeting with Pradhans and Secretaries of all Mahila Mandals within the Panchayat has been scheduled for February 5 to discuss further implementation strategies.

This green initiative reflects a growing awareness about ecological responsibility and aims to foster a culture of sustainability within the local community.
