Himachal Pradesh Braces for Heavy Snow and Rain as Weather Worsens

Shimla, February 27 – Light to moderate snowfall continued in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh, while intermittent rain lashed several parts of the middle and low hills, the Meteorological Department reported on Thursday.

An orange warning has been issued for heavy to very heavy rain and snowfall in isolated areas of Mandi, Kangra, Kullu, and Chamba districts on Thursday and Friday. Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for heavy snow in Lahaul and Spiti and heavy rain and snow in Shimla district during the same period. The weather office has also predicted heavy rainfall in Una and Hamirpur districts.

Snowfall and Rainfall Updates

Keylong recorded 20 cm of snow, followed by Khadrala (12 cm), Kukumseri (9.6 cm), Hansa (8 cm), and Kalpa (3.4 cm) since Wednesday evening. Meanwhile, Sarahan received the highest rainfall at 29.1 mm, followed by Seobagh (22.2 mm), Manali (19 mm), Bharmour (17 mm), and Jot (16 mm). Other areas, including Shimla, Solan, Kalpa, Mandi, Kufri, and Kasauli, recorded 2 to 5 mm of rainfall.

Cold Wave Intensifies

Tabo in Lahaul and Spiti district was the coldest location, with a minimum temperature of -4.5°C recorded during the night.

Seasonal Rain Deficit

From January 1 to February 27, Himachal Pradesh received only 70.4 mm of rainfall, significantly lower than the normal 181.7 mm, marking a 61% deficit for the season.

With the severe weather conditions expected to persist, authorities have advised residents and travelers to exercise caution, particularly in snow-prone regions.
