Swift Action by NTPC Authorities and Villagers Saves Lives in Bilaspur District

Bilaspur/Mandi, May 15: In a heart-stopping turn of events along the Sutlej River in Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur district, two young children were rescued from rising waters on Wednesday evening thanks to the prompt intervention by NTPC Koldam project authorities and the bravery of a local villager.

The incident occurred in Khangar village when three children—Krish (8), his sister Mannat (10), and Anuj Thakur (12)—were playing on the riverbank. As per standard protocol, the 800 MW Koldam hydroelectric project, situated upstream, released water for power generation after sounding the siren.

Mannat managed to escape safely as the water level surged, but Krish and Anuj got stranded on a large stone mid-river. Seeing the danger, Mannat raised an alarm, prompting a crowd of concerned locals from Mandi and Bilaspur districts to gather along the riverbanks.

NTPC Shuts Down Flow, Local Hero Springs Into Action

Alerted to the unfolding crisis, Anjana Kumari, ward member of Lower Bhated Panchayat, immediately contacted the NTPC Koldam authorities. In a swift and coordinated response, the dam gates were closed to reduce the river's flow, temporarily halting power generation.

As the waters receded, Rajendra Kumar (55), a driver from Nichli Bhater village, took decisive action. Armed with ropes, he braved the river’s current and reached the stranded boys, safely bringing them back to shore.

“I received a message that two kids were trapped in water around 6:30 on Wednesday evening and ran to save the kids,” Rajendra said, recalling the dramatic rescue.

Community Thanks NTPC, Honours Local Saviour

The decision to stop power generation led to operational and financial setbacks for the NTPC Koldam project. Still, the authorities prioritized human life over losses — a gesture that earned widespread appreciation.

On Thursday, the rescued children's parents, public representatives, and villagers visited the NTPC Koldam office to express their heartfelt gratitude. Rajendra Kumar, whose quick-thinking and courage averted a tragedy, was honoured by the NTPC management for his heroic deed.

This incident is a powerful example of community spirit, timely coordination, and the value of every life.
