Guwahati, Feb 3 (PTI) – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday, expressing gratitude for the Centre’s approval of a new urea plant in Namrup, announced in the Union Budget. During the meeting, Sarma sought the Prime Minister’s guidance on the upcoming Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit, which Modi is set to inaugurate later this month.
The Namrup urea plant, with a projected capacity of 12.7 lakh metric tonnes, is expected to attract an investment of ₹10,000 crore. Sarma highlighted that this initiative would help Assam leverage its natural gas resources for fertilizer production, reducing India's dependency on imports.
In a post on X, Sarma said, “It was an absolute privilege to meet Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji today. On behalf of the people of Assam, I expressed our gratitude for the Govt's decision to approve the Urea Plant in Namrup, which will be a game-changer in the State's developmental journey.”
High-Level Meetings with Union Ministers
Apart from the PM, Sarma met several Union ministers to discuss state-related issues and extend invitations to the summit. He called upon Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, thanking her for a “historic budget” that prioritizes the middle class and small businesses. Sitharaman has agreed to chair the valedictory session of the summit.Sarma also met Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, discussing Assam’s infrastructure development. “We are investing ₹1 lakh crore to build a world-class road network in Assam. Hon'ble Minister will expand on this vision during #AdvantageAssam2,” he stated.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will lead discussions on increasing exports from Assam, while Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri will chair a session on the Hydrocarbons and Energy sector. Sarma emphasized Assam’s “early mover advantage in the oil industry” and the need to fully harness its potential.
Digital and Technological Advancements
The Chief Minister also met Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who will lead a session on the role of digital infrastructure in Assam’s development. “This session will bring together key stakeholders and the best minds in the communication and tech industry to formulate an Assam-specific strategy,” Sarma said.In a discussion with Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Sarma highlighted Assam’s efforts to build a semiconductor ecosystem, with the minister’s support expected to encourage investors in the state’s upcoming Electronic City.
The Advantage Assam 2.0 summit is set to be a crucial platform for investment discussions, infrastructure expansion, and economic growth, reinforcing Assam’s role as a vital link between India and ASEAN nations.
