
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu action regarding a reported explosion at an illegal coal mine that killed 18 workers in the Thangskai area of East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. The Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Meghalaya, requesting a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. The incident reportedly left several others trapped at unspecified depths. The NHRC has also taken suo motu action regarding the case of the captivity of 5 children in Gurugram, Haryana. The Commission has issued a notice to the Police Commissioner of Haryana, requesting a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. According to the media report, the children were detained by a contractor and his four workers in Gurugram for allegedly attempting to steal construction materials from an under-construction building. The Commission stated that if the information in the news report is accurate, it raises serious concerns about the violation of the human rights of the children involved.
