Hurriyat Chief Welcomes India-Pakistan Ceasefire, Calls Dialogue the Path to Peace

Srinagar, May 10 – Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Saturday expressed strong support for the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, describing it as a step towards lasting peace and stability in the region.

In a post on X, the Mirwaiz said, "Alhumdulilah (thank god). Better sense has prevailed and India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire." He noted that the announcement has brought immense relief, particularly to people living along both sides of the Line of Control (LoC), who have long endured the brunt of cross-border hostilities.

"The ceasefire comes as a huge relief to all, especially those residing on either side of the LoC, where countless lives have been lost and homes and livelihoods destroyed," he said.

Welcoming the potential for further talks between the two nations, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq praised US Secretary Marco Rubio’s statement on the possibility of a broader dialogue. "The possibility of talks among the two, as stated by US Secretary Marco Rubio on a broad set of issues, is a welcome outcome. Talks are the means to peace and stability. Glad that leadership on both sides agreed to this," he added.

The announcement of the ceasefire was made by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, stating that the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan had agreed to halt all military operations on land, air, and sea from 5 PM on Saturday.

This diplomatic breakthrough came shortly after US President Donald Trump declared that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire following a night of intensive talks facilitated by Washington.

The ceasefire followed a period of heightened military tension, with both countries exchanging fire and striking each other’s military installations.

The Hurriyat chairman’s statement underscores a broader call for dialogue and peaceful resolution, reflecting hopes for de-escalation and long-term stability in the region.
