Nagpur, Feb 26: Danish Malewar silenced his critics and rewrote his season’s narrative with a match-defining century in the Ranji Trophy final, steering Vidarbha out of early trouble against Kerala. The young batter, who had struggled to convert fifties into centuries this season, rose to the occasion with an unbeaten 138 off 259 balls, laced with 14 boundaries and two sixes. His crucial 215-run stand with Karun Nair (86) for the fourth wicket powered Vidarbha to 254/4 at stumps on Day 1.
Vidarbha faced early jitters at 24/3, but Malewar’s composed approach ensured stability. Reflecting on his innings, he revealed that his primary focus was staying at the crease rather than chasing a century.
“I wasn't thinking about a hundred initially. We had lost early wickets, and the pitch was aiding the bowlers with seam movement. My goal was to bat with a straight bat and keep things simple after reaching fifty,” Malewar shared in the post-day press conference.
The 21-year-old had already notched up five fifties and a century in his debut season but was determined to deliver on the big stage. His preparation paid off, as he exhibited remarkable patience alongside Nair, who guided him during phases of waning concentration.
A notable moment came when Malewar celebrated his century with an ears-shut gesture, reminiscent of India batter KL Rahul. Explaining the reason, he said, “KL Rahul is my idol, and he celebrates like this. I don't know why he does it, but I’ve been doing this since I was 19. For me, it symbolizes peace and blocking out outside noise.”
Despite the strong partnership, an unfortunate run-out saw Nair departing towards the day’s end, handing Kerala a late advantage. Malewar acknowledged the setback but remained optimistic.
“The run-out was unfortunate. You can’t pinpoint blame, but had it not happened, we would have been in an even stronger position,” he admitted.
With Vidarbha now in a commanding position at 254/4, Malewar's heroics have set the stage for an intense battle as the Ranji Trophy final unfolds.
