
On Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner of the East Jaintia Hills District, Manish Kumar, announced that the February 5 dynamite blast at an illegal coal mine in the Thangskoo village has resulted in 30 deaths. Speaking to the media, he stated that the district administration received information about the explosion in the afternoon and immediately dispatched teams led by the Additional Deputy Commissioner. With support from the state government, the NDRF, SDRF, and SRT were mobilized, and rescue operations continued until February 9. Twenty-eight deaths were confirmed on the scene, while two injured victims later died at Silchar Medical College, Assam. The administration has begun disbursing ex-gratia compensation, with eight families already receiving payments. Following the incident, strict enforcement drives have been launched, resulting in 34 FIRs, the seizure of coal and mining equipment, and two arrests so far. Authorities have assured intensified action, including drone surveillance, to completely curb illegal mining in the district.
