IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorm Alert for West Bengal Till May 21.webp

Weather Set to Shift in Heatwave-Hit South Bengal

Kolkata, May 17—The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for West Bengal, forecasting thunderstorms, gusty winds, and heavy rainfall in several districts through May 21. This marks a significant shift in weather for regions currently reeling under heatwave conditions.

According to the IMD, South Bengal, which has endured scorching temperatures over recent days, will see a drop in mercury levels and a change in atmospheric conditions. This shift is attributed to the formation of a trough extending from northwest Uttar Pradesh to East Bangladesh, passing through Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal.

Enhanced Thunderstorm Activity Expected

The IMD noted that the combination of a favourable wind pattern and moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal will trigger intensified thunderstorm activity. Districts likely to be most affected include:
  • Purulia
  • Bankura
  • East and West Burdwan
  • Birbhum
  • Darjeeling
  • Kalimpong
These areas can expect heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms.

Moderate Rainfall in Other Districts

While the above districts face heightened weather activity, the IMD stated that other parts of the state are also likely to experience light to moderate rainfall with gusty winds and thunderstorms during the same period.

Authorities and residents have been advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during the forecasted weather changes.
