In siding with Russia over Ukraine, Trump not putting America first. Hastening US decline

Canberra, March 3 – Rarely has any nation squandered its diplomatic capital, undermined its political foundations, and alienated its allies as quickly and boldly as the United States under President Donald Trump. A recent fiery meeting in the Oval Office between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky underscored this dramatic decline, as Trump openly sought to humiliate the democratically elected leader of Ukraine, a nation currently battling aggression from Russia.

The confrontation unfolded primarily because Zelensky refused to yield to Trump's demands—declining to sign a humiliating agreement, openly criticizing Vladimir Putin (who has repeatedly attempted to assassinate him), and refusing to submit to Trump, who openly styles himself as America's de facto monarch.

Trump’s Actions Normalizing Political Chaos

Trump’s disruptive style has persisted long enough to become disturbingly normalized. With Vice President JD Vance acting as his political enforcer, Trump has dramatically shifted the Overton window, expanding what's politically acceptable to unprecedented extremes. Once moderate Republicans have either succumbed to silence or been co-opted into supporting this upheaval.

Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has intensified this trend by dismantling America’s civil service, replacing experienced professionals with loyalists. His social media platform, X, now openly features advertisements from neo-Nazi groups, further reflecting the chaotic state of affairs.

Controversial Appointments Weakening American Institutions

The transformation within key US institutions is stark. Kash Patel, now heading the FBI, has previously promoted discredited COVID-19 vaccine reversal treatments and authored children's books portraying Trump as royalty. Under Patel’s leadership, the FBI is already aggressively investigating political adversaries.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a known vaccine skeptic, leads the Department of Health and Human Services, coinciding disturbingly with America’s first measles fatalities in a decade. Public health research is now restricted to ideologically "approved" topics, endangering medical advances and public well-being.

The Pentagon under Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has astonishingly ordered US Cyber Command to cease operations against Russia—a move that many view as dangerously self-sabotaging. Meanwhile, deep cuts to USAID have severely damaged American soft power, inadvertently benefiting China, which stands ready to fill the vacuum.

Trump's International Strategy: Isolation or Weakness?

Trump’s strategy, or apparent lack thereof, is causing global tremors mere weeks into his second administration. The US voting against a UN General Assembly resolution condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine aligned America disturbingly alongside Russia, North Korea, and Belarus—a move that even China avoided by abstaining.

In the UK, public sentiment has shifted dramatically, with nearly half of Britons now prioritizing support for Ukraine over maintaining good relations with the US. Trump's bizarre proposal that China, Russia, and the US each halve their defense budgets is widely viewed as projecting weakness rather than strength.

Economic and Geopolitical Missteps

Trump's approach mirrors the isolationism of former US President Andrew Jackson, yet this policy appears economically misguided and geopolitically naive. High tariffs, intended to shield American businesses, inevitably cause inflation and consumer hardship. Meanwhile, Trump's aspiration to drive a wedge between Russia and China—dubbed a "reverse Kissinger" approach—ignores Putin's strategic alignment with China, potentially positioning Russia's vast southern border as the new frontline of a looming Cold War.

Erosion of Trust Among Allies

The repercussions of Trump’s actions on international alliances have been immediate and severe. Traditional US allies in Europe and Asia are now deeply concerned over Washington’s commitment to their security. NATO allies faced a sobering reality during February’s Munich Security Conference when US representatives implied America might no longer consider itself Europe's primary security guarantor.

This swift shift forces European nations to rapidly rearm and collectively assume responsibility for Ukraine’s security—a challenge given Europe's past reluctance to act decisively.

In Asia, the security implications are similarly alarming. Japan and South Korea may now seriously consider nuclear capabilities to counterbalance an emboldened China. Australia's future under AUKUS, a significant defense pact involving US nuclear-powered submarines, is now uncertain. Canberra must decide whether to deepen military integration with a partner increasingly indifferent to longstanding alliances.

Global Instability and America’s Rapid Decline

Trump’s second term has unleashed unprecedented chaos, swiftly undermining American influence and stability on the world stage. His "America First" policy ironically accelerates America's decline, leaving it increasingly isolated and mistrusted.

Ultimately, Trump's actions have created a world marked by uncertainty, danger, and growing geopolitical tension—an environment far removed from stability and cooperation.
