February 14, New Delhi – US immigration authorities plan to increase the number of immigrants they can hold by the end of 2026, allocating $38 billion for acquiring and renovating detention centers.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) aims to increase bed capacity to 92,600 to prepare for more arrests and enforcement operations.
Under the plan, ICE will acquire or renovate eight large detention centers and 16 smaller processing sites, as well as 10 existing facilities.
ICE’s bed capacity has grown from about 40,000 when Trump took office, amid reports of overcrowding and poor conditions.
The new facilities are planned to be operational by November 30. This announcement comes as Congress debates funding for ICE, which could lead to a partial government shutdown.
